A fine early example of an English Canterbury. These pieces were first introduced in the late 18th century and intended for a music room and were designed to store sheet music, often used to store magazines or books in recent years. This early example dates to c 1810 and is of a plain stylish rectangular design with a slender mahogany frame with four divisions. Below there is a slim single drawer with original gilt brass knobs. This charming piece stands on elegantly turned slender legs with original brass castors. ( one rear castor was replaced but it is a close match to the originals.)
This Canterbury or magazine rack is in very good condition.
English, circa 1810

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.
