Self taught René Jean Durey (1890-1959)) specialised in painting industrial scenes and suburban streets that are are beautiful and haunting in their strange stillness. In this respect, his work is almost surrealist.
Durey exhibited in 1917 in the Huyghens Room, a gallery located at 6, rue Huyghens, alongside Moïse Kisling and Henry de Waroquier. He also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendents and had a major retrospective in Stockholm in 1948.
Two works by René Durey are in the collections of the Pompidou Centre/National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In the UK, a work by the artist is in the Wilson Gallery and Museum in Cheltenham.
Our painting depicts suburban Meudon, some six miles South of Paris, with its trademark viaduc built during the construction of the railway linking Paris-Montparnasse station to Versailles-Chantiers station. Two figures (and a dog?) are faintly visible on the street. Dating from circa 1930, the work has been restored, measures 24 x 33 cm and is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size is 43 x 34 cm
