Chinese Yellow-glazed Brushpot, Daoguang Period (1821-1850)

19th century
Description

Cylindrical yellow glazed carved bamboo form Chinese brushpot. Dark yellow monochrome coating with relief decoration of fine Phoenix bird (Fenghuang) pictured in front of a flowering tree near large flowers. The exterior of the picture continues with an image of a classical Chinese beetle. All within a landscape with sun, clouds, flowers and tree.

The Phoenix, also known as Fenghuang in Chinese, has a long and rich history in Chinese culture, dating back to at least the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). In Chinese mythology, the Phoenix is often depicted as a powerful and divine bird that symbolizes renewal, rebirth, and immortality. It is said to represent the union of yin and yang, and is often associated with the Empress and feminine power. It is also considered one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations, which are used to represent the cardinal directions. In Chinese culture, the Phoenix is also associated with the concept of Feng Shui, which is the practice of harmonizing one's surroundings to promote good energy and fortune. The Phoenix is said to bring prosperity and good luck, and is often incorporated into Chinese architecture, furniture, and clothing as a decorative motif. Overall, the Phoenix holds great significance in Chinese culture as a symbol of power, renewal, and good fortune, and continues to be an important part of Chinese art, literature, and mythology to this day. The beetle in Chinese traditions often associates with prosperity and good fortune.
