American Silver Cafe Royal Spoon - Gorham

19th century
Description

A lovely example of a Cafe Royal Spoon American silver Gorham Manufacturing Co, crescent mark for 1895. I understand that this would sit on top of the cup, hence the hook on one side, a sugar cube would be placed in the middle and brandy poured over, then tipped into the cup. Some descriptions say that the brandy would be set alight, no evidence that this has happened to this spoon. Lovely hexagonal shaped with a beaded edge to the bowl and handle. A very elegant piece of silver.
