The Black Cat café or The Chat Noir was in the area of Old Compton Street, London; many of its customers were male prostitutes working in Piccadilly. Hall was greatly attracted to bohemian life and was a frequent visitor to the café, it was here that he came into contact with some larger than life characters, including, Jack Neave (Iron Foot Jack) and Quentin Crisp. Quentin described sitting with his friends at the Chat Noir (or Black Cat) coffee shop ‘night after loveless night… buying each other cups of tea, combing each other’s hair and trying on each other’s lipsticks’. From 1940 Clifford Hall painted Quentin Crisp three times. He also painted Jack Neave at The Chat Noir in 1961; the painting of Jack was sold at Bonhams on January 23, 2001, in London.
