Antique Fully Restored Regency 1810 Chesterfield Sofa Brown Leather Carved Frame

19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare, fully restored Regency circa 1810 brown leather Chesterfield tufted sofa with hand carved Walnut frame

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

A one of kind piece, this original Regency sofa is simply put a work of art. The carvings to the arms are super sculptural and have a wonderful timber patina

This sofa has been totally and utterly restored, it has been stripped back to the bare frame, all the joints have been glued and clamped, the exposed timber has been washed back and then French polished by a third-generation French polisher. It’s then been rebuilt using the original horse hair padding and coil springs throughout. The leather upholstery is all genuine vintage heritage hide, it has been in storage for 40 years and has beautifully aged. It’s been upholstered by the finest upholsterer I know in the trade, every panel perfectly cut and individually hand nail tacked in place using vintage solid brass studs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century under British Regency influence, these sofas feature classical proportions, fine hardwood frames like mahogany or rosewood, and decorative elements such as carved rosettes and scrolled arms.

Authentic 19th-century leather sofas feature solid timber frames, typically mahogany or oak, upholstered in full-grain calfskin or cowhide leather secured with brass studding and filled with natural horsehair or down.

Authentic Regency seating features hand-carved detailing on exposed timber elements, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, individual brass nailhead trim, and original coil spring or webbing construction methods.

Position the sofa as a focal point in a contemporary room, pairing dark leather and warm timber tones with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and textured wool throws to balance period character with modern simplicity.

Keep leather furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying. Clean regularly with a soft cloth and apply a specialised leather conditioner periodically to maintain flexibility.
