Rare Bowl with Classical Scenes by Royal Vienna, C. 1790

Royal Vienna gilt bowl with classical scenes, Austria, Beehive mark. An exceptional antique Vienna porcelain bowl hand painted with a scene from Greek mythology. The bowl is painted with a continuous mythological theme throughout. The piece has a gilded painted decoration in gold floral pattern on the dark green background on the top and bottom edge of the bowl. The piece bears the beehive mark of Imperial & Royal Manufactory “Royal Vienna” which corresponds to the mentioned period (1774-1827) stamped asymmetrically in blue underglaze. This bowl has a style of porcelain that has a particular decorative style that draws on paintings and sculpture of the Renaissance with strong elements of Greek Classicism.

Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory Vienna, 1718-1864, produced decorative and table porcelain, figurines. With the help of two workers from the Meissen manufactory Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, 1718-1744, succeeded in producing porcelain and established a manufactory. During the following years the manufactory was expanded and in 1761 became profitable. In 1785 Baron Sorgenthal was appointed general manager and he led the manufactory to its artistically and financially most successful period. After his death in 1805 and as a result of the Napoleonic Wars the manufactory slowly declined and was closed in 1864. The high point, perhaps the factory's most glamorous period, was from 1784 to 1805 when a variety of innovative wares in broadly Neoclassical styles were produced.
