This exquisite antique figurine depicts a courting couple; a young woman seated on an outdoor bench adorned with grapes and flowers, while a young man stands behind her, attempting to embrace her as she shyly evades his touch.

Crafted in the Volkstedt factory at the end of the 19th century, this magnificent pair is made of unglazed Parian porcelain, which mimics the appearance of marble. Parian porcelain is a type of unglazed bisque porcelain developed in the mid-nineteenth century, named after Paros, the Greek island known for white marble. It was formulated to imitate carved marble in a castable ceramic material, allowing complex sculptures to be manufactured for domestic interiors.

Bisque or biscuit porcelain is fired once without a surface glaze, resulting in a matte, porous finish. Liquid porcelain slip is poured into plaster moulds, allowed to set, and meticulously hand-detailed prior to high-temperature kiln firing.

Period pieces display crisp moulding detail, a matte surface texture, and slight translucency when held to light. Identification is further verified by impressed factory marks, numerical model codes, or maker monograms on the underside of the base.

These unglazed ceramic sculptures provide contrast when displayed against dark timber furniture, inside glass vitrines, or on modern stone surfaces. The neutral monochromatic finish allows them to integrate into both classical and contemporary room schemes.

Because unglazed porcelain is porous, surface dust should be removed using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush. Chemical solvents and prolonged immersion in water should be avoided to prevent moisture absorbing into the untreated ceramic.
