Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silhouette portraits gained immense popularity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as an accessible method of portraiture prior to photography. They were created by cutting black card or painting profiles in ink, named after the French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette.

Authentic nineteenth-century silhouettes were commonly mounted behind glass in papier-mache or ebonised wood rectangular frames, featuring inner gilded brass ovals and brass hangers shaped like acorns, leaves, or rings.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, such as slight oxidisation on the brass trim, gentle toning or foxing on the paper background, and period-appropriate joinery or backing paper on the frame.

These small-scale artworks function effectively in gallery wall arrangements, paired alongside modern line drawings, placed inside bookshelves, or hung in narrow wall spaces to introduce historic detail.

Display the framed portrait away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper fading and warping. Clean the glass carefully with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the brass or wood frame.
