Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century cylinder music box is an automatic mechanical instrument where sound is produced by a revolving brass cylinder fitted with tiny pins that pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb. Originating in Switzerland, these instruments were housed in fine timber cabinets designed to act as acoustic soundboards.

Victorian music boxes were constructed using brass for the pinned cylinders and gearing, steel for the comb teeth, and glass for inner protective dust covers. The outer cabinets were crafted from high-grade timbers such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, often embellished with stringing or marquetry.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy cast beds, hand-cut steel comb teeth, and original printed or handwritten paper tune cards attached to the inner lid. The presence of period winding levers or key mechanisms alongside brass fittings help confirm age.

A large cylinder music box serves as a functional statement object on a hallway console, sideboard top, or library desk. Displaying the box with the main lid open reveals the internal brass mechanism and tune card, creating visual interest.

Keep the instrument in a stable temperature environment away from dampness and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and metal oxidisation. Avoid fully winding the spring mechanism when not in regular use, and dust the cabinet gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
