Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bouillotte lamp is a traditional French table lamp originating in the late 18th century, named after the popular French card game Bouillotte. It typically features a central brass shaft, two to four candlestick arms, and an adjustable painted metal shade designed to shield players eyes from glare.

Toleware lamps are constructed from lacquered or painted sheet metal, often tin or iron, decorated with gilt or painted motifs. The supporting structure, arms, and base are typically cast or turned brass.

Authentic pieces feature a solid brass construction, a weighted base, and a painted sheet-metal shade secured with a screw key mechanism on the central stem. Earlier models were created for actual wax candles before being converted or manufactured for electric fittings in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

These lamps are styled on executive writing desks, library tables, or sideboards. The dark green shade and brass finish provide contrast against wood surfaces or dark painted joinery.

Dust the painted metal shade with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical solvents that could remove gilt decoration. Unlacquered brass elements can be polished gently, while lacquered brass requires only dry dusting.
