Constant Ludovic Artz (1870- 1951) was born in Paris to David Aldoph Constant Artz and Helene Schemel. His father was a well-known Dutch painter. At the age of twelve Artz was enrolled at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. By 1899 Artz had completed his studies and was apprenticing in the studio of the Dutch Classical painter Anthony Offermans, where he continued to improve his technical skills.

Much like his father Artz was fascinated by nature, and despite testing his hand painting Dutch landscape scenes, cityscapes and still lifes, he found himself most drawn to capturing scenes of ducks and waterfowl. It was in painting his passion that found Artz the most commercial success, commanding the interest of many contemporaries and collectors.
