Hingstons of Wilton has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It is made of sold teak and mounted with multiple blacksmiths made corners, handles and fittings. It would have been used by a merchant or wealthy family to transport valuables on journeys around India, the Northwest passage, and the Silk Road.
As this was to be taken on perilous journeys it required it to be strong and up to the bashing it would endure. Hence the iron bound corners were added for protection not decoration.
The lid opens to reveal a full interior and will give a superb storage option.
It would have been painted in a bright colour as that was the fashion in Asia.
Time and wear enhances the appearance and it is lovely how the teak underneath the paint bleeds through to give this an amazing decorative look.
