Portrait Of A Scottish Lady C1834, Large Oil On Canvas 30" X 25", Unsigned

£1,050    $1,368    €1,249
This is a fine oil painting of a wealthy Scottish lady in her super bonnet, dating from around 1834. The canvas is really good condition for its age and the well-made frame, though distressed is almost complete.
The frame was made by Hugh Paton – there is a very good label on the back that says “H Paton, Carver, Gilder & Picture Frame Maker to their Royal Highnesses The Duchess of Kent & The Princess Victoria. No. 23 25 27 & 29 Head of Horse Wynd, West Corner of College, Edinburgh”
The Duchess of Kent was Princess Victoria’s mother, and Princess Victoria became Queen Victoria in 1837. Hugh Paton continued to make frames for the Royal Family after she became Queen and was very proud of this connection to Royalty.
The canvas is stamped Roberson & Millar, 51 Longacre, London with a stencil R & M 2219. The style of these marks date the canvas to 1834.
Hugh Paton had an account with Roberson to supply canvases and they both supplied to such famous artists as JMW Turner and Thomas Sidney Cooper at about the same time.
So this lovely large portrait is probably a well-known lady of the time, by a competent portrait artist, but we don’t know who she is and it isn’t signed.
