Stunning Pair of early Meiji period Satsuma heavy gauge earthenware Rouleau Japanese Vases of Museum quality and generous proportions. These beautiful Satsuma-ware vases were made during the Meiji period (1868-1912), in this distinctive and wonderful style, and in Rouleau vase form. Each of baluster outline, hand decorated in colours of rich enamels with lavish gilding depicting a continuous scene of Buddhist Figures, Warriors and Courtier on a lavish gold background. The twin handles modeled as barrels within arrows. Note, each view of horses done with raised cream enameling depicting faux ivory which gives wonderful detailing effects. Condition: Superb condition with no allover losses, no wear to gilding at top rims. Base marks impressed as shown on both pieces, see images, very nice untouched surface patination.
