Description

A well-modelled and finely-detailed Parian biblical group of Eliezer and Rebecca at the well.

The figure depicts Abraham’s servant, on his errand to find a wife for Abraham’s son Isaac, meeting Rebecca at the well where he decided her behaviour showed she met the necessary criteria. In the Christian Old Testament (Genesis 24) the servant is unnamed, but Jewish religious tradition refers to him as Eliezer, and he is so called in the many paintings of this popular subject and on this figure.

Condition:

Chips on the plant below,the tip of the index finger of Rebecca's right hand is chipped off,also the thumb of her left hand is chipped off

There was once a ring in Eliezer's left hand, now it is lost. There is a small firing crack on Eliezer's left foot, small firing cracks on the back of the sculpture.

If the sculpture is turned upside down, you can see the firing crack on the bottom.

All these small defects do not affect the impression of this wonderful sculpture.

It is in excellent antique condition.

Parian ware is a form of unglazed ceramic developed during the 19th century in Britain as an accessible alternative to carved marble. The material takes its name from Paros, the Aegean island famed for its white marble.

Parian objects were produced using a slip-casting technique, where liquid clay containing feldspar was poured into plaster moulds. After firing, the unglazed finish retained a matte, marble-like texture with sharp structural detail.

Period pieces often bear impressed makers marks, registration stamps, or dates near the base. The surface displays a uniform matte texture, significant visual weight, and crisp clarity in the drapery and facial features.

These monochrome figures function as focal points on dark timber console tables, mantelpieces, or inside glazed bookcases. The neutral off-white surface creates a high-contrast accent against modern painted walls or dark woodwork.

Dusting should be performed regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush to clear soil from carved recesses. For light surface marks, mild soap diluted in warm water applied with a soft microfibre cloth is effective, avoiding prolonged immersion.
