James Hardy Galleon Warship Anchored Off Valletta Harbour Malta 19th Manner Marine Oil Portrait Painting on Panel

1940 - 1960
Description

A quality marine painting finished in acrylic oils on an half inch thick wooden panel depicting an impressive three masted frigate returning to harbour, a beautiful example in the 19th century manner.

The vessel is anchored just outside The Grand Harbour, known as the Port of Valletta, which is a natural harbour on the island of Malta.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

James Hardy III was a British painter who was born in 1937.

His works are well known in the art market and are very desirable and an excellent investment.

The painting is very similar in manner to works by Salvatore Colacicco and demonstrates an excellent standard of detail and accuracy in the way the vessel is painted, having plenty of natural daylight and brightness conveyed within the scene.

His paintings are similar in manner to works by James Hardy and are selling today for considerable sums ranging from £3000- £5000 and higher for the largest examples involving more time and effort to paint.

Salvatore Colacicco's style of painting was very reminiscent of marine artists during the

19th century and his works have an obvious Italian feel as does the example we offer,

Salvatore Colacicco was a world-renowned marine artist who was born in 1935 in Bellagio, near Lake Como and studied at Brera Academy, Milan.

The example we offer bears a faint signature in the lower bottom right corner J Hardy.

PRICES

His prices for works offered at auction have ranged greatly depending on the medium with small examples selling from $300 to $7844 USD achieved at auction in 2014 at Christies South Kensington.

His large scale works on wooden panel finished in acrylic oil paint are very desirable

and achieve the best prices.

Marine oil painting emerged as a distinct genre during the 17th century, gaining immense popularity across Europe through the 19th century by capturing naval history, trade routes, and coastal landscapes.

Artists traditionally applied oil-based pigments to rigid wood panels or stretched linen canvas, typically mounting the finished work in carved or moulded gilded timber frames.

Authentic period paintings display natural surface craquelure, subtle oxidisation on the reverse timber panel, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

A traditional maritime painting serves as an ideal focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing seamlessly with dark timber furniture and neutral wall tones.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, gently dusting the frame with a dry soft-bristle brush while avoiding liquid cleaners on the paint surface.
