Amboyna wood, characterised by its uniform small curls and knots was not commonly seen before the second decade of the 19th century. Found on the so-called ''Spice Islands'' of present-day Indonesia, veneers of this ''exceedingly beautiful and highly ornamental wood'' had their Golden Age up until the mid-19th century, when it was superseded by African thuya wood.
