An Elegant Mahogany Wine Cooler

Attributed to Maples & Co

Constructed from mahogany, nicely bookmatched flamed veneers to the front, supported on bracket feet and brass castors; with a carved Vitruvian scroll frieze, domed top, brass handles, and a lead liner.

English, circa 1910

Established in 1841 by John Maple, Maple & Co began its operations at the heart of London's furniture center, Tottenham Court Road. Through the founder and his son's dedication and commitment to producing excellent products, the company experienced significant expansion. This growth led to the establishment of additional workshops and sales points in Paris and Buenos Aires, followed by the opening of a shop in far-flung Smyrna.

Maple's esteemed clientele included notable figures such as Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, members of the Royal Household, the King of Siam, and Nicholas II, Tsar of Russia.

In later years, Maples had the privilege of furnishing the Royal yachts QE1, QE2, and the Queen Mary, as well as hotels in Nice, London, Paris, and Siam.

A cellarette or wine cooler is a specialised wooden container designed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to house and chill wine bottles in dining rooms. The sarcophagus shape, inspired by classical Roman and Egyptian stone coffins, became a prominent decorative style during the Regency and Victorian periods.

Antique wine coolers were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring flame mahogany veneers and carved decorative elements. Internally, they were lined with zinc or lead to hold ice and water, and fitted with heavy brass drop handles and brass castors for transport.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-carved mouldings, dovetail joinery, and natural age-related patina on the timber surfaces. Look for original brass hardware with oxidisation, signs of lead or zinc lining inside the lid or base, and maker stamps or enamel plaques on the interior framework.
