In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 1920s.
It sits on a turned wooden base. The compass is mounted on a metal mount which allows it to swivel and turn, designed to do so to compensate for the movement on a boat. The rim of the compass is stamped for the maker "Kelvin & Hughes Ltd" and the front of the binnacle has a stamp for "Joh Gubransen Oslo" .

The compass is in good condition for its age and has been cleaned and lightly polished and displays beautifully. It has picked up various minor marks, scuffs and signs of use and some small dinks but nothing detrimental. The brass has tarnished over time and the glass has a few surface marks but nothing major. The compass itself is in working order and is, as far as I can tell, fairly accurate.
The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
