Royal Worshester Cabinet Plate by John Stinton, C. 1912.

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare stunning Royal Worcester porcelain cabinet plate hand painted with a scene titled ‘Hastings castle’ by famous John Stinton (1854–1956) and dated 1912. The plate has a central scene of the castle set in a landscape within a decorative border with small floral vignettes hand painted around the edge and set within a cobalt ground with finely gilded decoration, the shaped rim with a gilded finish. The plate is signed by J. Stinton within the painted scene and bears the title 'Hastings Castle ' painted on the base with puce printed Royal Worcester mark including a date code mark for 1912.

Hastings Castle is a huge part of England's history - Britain's first Norman castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1067. An iconic landmark of England's stormy past, Hastings Castle represents a significant step in the direction of England's development: historically, politically and culturally. Hand Painted during the 1912, this collector plate is a true testament to the English culture and heritage. This piece of art made by John Stinton, vivid representative and the most talented of the Stinson family.

The Worcester Stinton dynasty is renowned for their famous Highland Cattle and Gamebird scenes. They are probably the best known of all Royal Worcester artists, with members of the family painting at the various Worcester factories for almost one hundred and sixty years. The best known of these would undoubtedly be Harry Stinton, his father John Stinton junior and his uncle James Stinton.

John Stinton was the eldest son, but did not take up china painting until the rather late age of thirty five. He commenced working at the Royal Worcester factory in 1889, having begun painting at Grainger's; from 1903, he specialized in painting scenes of Highland Cattle in landscapes, he depicted a large number of watercolor landscapes. But a special theme in his artwork was the creation of the fine images of British castles on the porcelain plates. They brought him deserved glory and recognition of his talent.

The works of John Stinton, especially the scenes of English Castles, was made in a small quantity and are highly valued by collectors from all the world and some of them are represented in famous museums.

At all auctions, his line of ’English Castle’ plates are hunted by true admirers of his talent. To acquire his work is considered a fortune, despite their high cost. One of these plates we are bringing to your attention.
