Antique Imperial Russian Solid Silver Pair Of Spoons Cloisonne Enamel Flower Motif - Moscow C.1910 Vasily Agafonov

£650    $827    €784
We are delighted to offer this enchanting pair of polychrome enamel antique Imperial Russian silver spoons made in Moscow c.1910 with maker''s mark for probably Vasily Agafonov.

This pair is a wonderful example of fine polychrome cloisonné enamel with a splendid array of colours and intricate techniques. As typically found on Agafonov''s wares, these spoons feature a lovely multicolour flower design embedded within a scrolled foliate motif.

The gradation of the enamel colours blending in with one another and the accented areas are very intricate and a testament to the high degree of enamelling artistry. The overall surface of the spoons is fully silver gilt (gold on top of solid silver) which creates a wonderful warm contrast with the vibrant enamel.

In spite of what could be a very bland and utilitarian item, such spoons have been decorated and treated as an object of vertu and almost jewellery-like. Each ''cloison'' (the compartment between the twist rope borders) has been meticulously crafted from a fine twisted silver wire and filled immaculately.

Such contrast and artistic juxtaposition between utility and ornamentation is particularly delightful on these pieces and serve as such a wonderful aesthetic contrast in interior settings among other silverware or as a highlighting piece on a table. The colourful enamel and delicacy are almost jewel-like and would also gracefully compliment jewellery collections.

The spoon is hallmarked with matching marks, 84 Kokoshnik with the delta symbol for Moscow and the maker''s mark which is indistinct but likely for Vasily Agafonov ''BA''.
