This is a scarce Georgian, ''Newcastle'' light baluster wine glass dating from the mid-18th century, c1750. These glasses were originally thought to have been blown in Newcastle, England and then exported to The Netherlands for engraving (although this is a plain example). Recent excavations have proven them to have originated in The Netherlands even though they are blown in lead glass.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 270 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has a rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a thin light baluster, five knop stem. The stem leads to a conical, folded foot which measures 8.8 cm (3.5 inches) in diameter. The glass is 19.5 cm (7.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any obvious signs of restoration. There are two collectors'' stickers to the underside of the foot.
English lead glass weighing in at 210 g. (~ 7 1/2 oz.).
Provenance: collected by Arthur Henry Green (deceased 1953) and then by descent.
