Cast iron garden troughs gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century, particularly within Victorian estates and formal gardens. Advances in foundry casting techniques permitted intricate architectural motifs to be produced in durable metal for outdoor ornamentation.

These planters were created by pouring molten iron into sand moulds formed from carved wooden master patterns. This process allowed detailed relief patterns, scrollwork, and gadrooned edges to be replicated cleanly in heavy iron.
