Elephants in Chinese art symbolise peace, strength, and good fortune, often portrayed carrying vase-like candleholders on their backs as a pun for peace (taiping youxiang). These decorative porcelain forms were produced both for domestic use and export from ceramic centres such as Jingdezhen and Dehua.

They were typically hand-moulded or slip-cast using kaolin clay before being coated with a clear or ivory glaze and fired at high temperatures. The candle holder nozzle is integrated into the saddle design on the elephants back.

Authentic historical pieces often feature glaze irregularities, pinholes, slight iron spots, and unglazed rim bottoms or bases showing fine clay texture. Hand-sculpted details and subtle variations in glaze thickness around carved areas also indicate period production.
