Late C19th Italian Neapolitan bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir sculpture , after the antique, “The Dancing Faun of Pompeii “
Well-cast verdigris bronze sculpture with an aged ‘faux excavation’ surface . The mythical woodland faun depicted entirely nude and with a tail , mounted on a plinth base . With luxuriant hair and beard , goat horns and a garland of acorns . The creature shown dancing In exultation his head and arms raised , on his tip-toes with a taut muscular physique .
The original bronze sculpture excavated from the site of a villa at Pompeii in 1830 , where it stood next to an impluvium basin to collect rainwater , and now exhibited in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples, Italy.
In excellent original condition with an aged surface and patina .
Probably by J.Chiurazzi et Fils foundry of Naples .
