This mangle board sometimes called a smoothing board or bed smoother. They are an interesting item of Scandinavian folk art. This domestic item was used to press or smooth laundry to remove folds after washing. It would have been used in conjunction with a roller on slightly damp items that were tightly rolled. Mangle boards as early as the 15th century have been discovered in Norway, this one is from Norway, and probably dates to the early 19th century. The almost flat plank of wood has chip carved geometric patterns and an applied stylised horse shaped carved handle. The whole item has its original polychrome dark red brown colour.
