Coastal Landscape, Houses by the Sea, Normandy Ca 1870 by Eugene Boudin's Friend and Collaborator Watercolour on Paper

19th century
Description

Henri Cassinelli (1833/40-1927) was the son of an art dealer in Le Havre. Henri started by painting harbour scenes in his home town, and soon also painted land and seascapes in nearly Honfleur. He studied with Jean-Baptiste Durand Brager in Paris and also became close to Eugène Boudin. Boudin and Cassinelli often worked together on the Normandy coast, and even collaborated and co signed a number of paintings. One of them is in the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, another in the Boudin museum in Honfleur.

Cassinelli was hence close to the "Normandy/Impressionist gang", and Claude Monet even drew a caricature of him and nicknamed him "Rufus Croutinelli".

Our atmospheric and very freely sketched watercolour certainly depicts to coast near Honfleur in Normandy. Measuring 13 x 20 cm at sight, the overall size in an elegant mount and frame are 32 x 38.5 cm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French coastal landscape art was defined by a movement towards plein air painting, capturing dynamic atmospheric light, changing coastal weather, and fluid topography using expressive brushwork and natural colour palettes.

Artists utilized lightfast natural earth pigments suspended in gum arabic, applied directly onto handmade cotton rag paper. Framing typically featured acid-free rag mounts enclosed within carved wood frames finished in leaf gilding or painted gesso.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate paper characteristics such as natural foxing, deckled edges, historical paper watermarks, and gentle pigment fading. Frame construction, historical mounting techniques, and artist inscriptions or signatures further verify period origin.

Integrate period paintings into modern spaces by placing them as focal accents above minimalist consoles, incorporating them into eclectic gallery walls, or pairing them with understated timber furniture to accentuate the gilded frame details.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight using UV-protective glass, maintain stable ambient humidity levels to prevent paper cockling or mould growth, and ensure all backing boards and mounting materials are strictly archival and acid-free.
