Françoise Landowksi (1917-2007) “Pierrot” Claude Debussy Oil Painting

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Fox Fine Art
Description

Françoise LANDOWKSI (1917-2007) “Pierrot” Claude Debussy

An ethereal painting of a pierrot with the image repeated until it fades away across the canvas. The pierrot is also shown in juxtaposition crossing in the opposite direction. Francoise merged her two artistic expressions of art and music in the 1970s by creating concert exhibitions where she played works by composers who had inspired paintings. The paintings were exhibited and projected during concerts – notably Debussy, Ravel and Mussorgsky. This work was probably inspired by Claude Debussy’s song “Pierrot”

Biography

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Landowski-Caillet was the daughter of the sculptor Paul Landowski. She had many illustrious artistically talented relatives including the painter Nadine Landowski.

She was a pupil of Marguerite Long and pursued a career as an international virtuoso pianist after the war and until the 1970s. She then became a piano teacher at the Conservatoire de Saint-Denis while beginning a second career as a painter.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century French expressionist artwork frequently bridges classical figurative subjects with fluid, gestural brushwork and muted, warm colour palettes popular in mid-twentieth-century Europe.

Artists typically employed oil paints executed on stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, presented within carved or painted timber frames.

Genuine paintings feature period-appropriate artist signatures, aged timber stretcher bars, natural canvas oxidisation, and consistent brush technique throughout the work.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a sideboard or mantelpiece, using warm directional lighting to highlight the paint texture and tone.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft natural-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners and placing the canvas away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
