Edwardian Copeland Porcelain Jewelled Demitasse Coffee Cup & Saucer

1900 - 1920
Description

A very fine Copeland coffee cup and saucer in the Queen Anne shape, quatrefoil with fluted inverted corners and moulded fishscales to the lower part of the cup and an elegant curved handle. Superb quality decoration with mazarine blue panels richly over-gilded with floral garlands, flowers and a dentil frame. The rims have a gilt diamond frieze intersected with shield type shapes all with raised beaded gilding and set with enamel "jewels" in turquoise and white enamel and further white jewels in the centres of the daisy flowers further down. The moulded fishscales are each edged and dotted with gilt and the pattern is recreated in the centre of the saucer. Gilt chain patterns to the corner fluting, pretty scalloped border inside the cup, and finished with gilding to the handle and rims. This set was manufactured for retail through the Osler Designers Store in London, c.1910 and is marked as such to the base along with the Copelands factory mark and pattern number 2225 painted to the cup

The cup measures 6.5cm (2 9/16") high to the rim and 6.4cm (2 1/2") rim to rim. The saucer is 12.1cm (4 3/4") wide and 2cm (3/4") high.

In really excellent condition with no damage or repair and minimal handling wear, just a really tiny spot of gilt wear to the very top of the handle. The reverse of the saucer is finely crazed due to the nature of the shape and is original.
