Fine Isfahan Rug, Central Persia, Circa 1900, 2.10m X 1.30m

1900 - 1920
Description

Isfahan is one of the most beautiful cities in Persia, and was once an imperial capital. Rug weaving was established in the courts as early as the 17th century and continues to this day. This is a lovely rug which, even compared to other rugs of this genre and period, has an exceptionally high knot count, with fine grainy wool and wonderful dyes. In particular I like the burnt orange shades and the greens. The central anchor medallion is glorious and is surrounded by a slightly angular drawing of arabesques and spandrels. The main border is equally beautiful and complements the field well. This is a very decorative furnishing piece which is enhanced by the changes of colour or abrashes that run through the design. It is thin and fine, and is really a work of textile art. Generally good condition, professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Isfahan rugs originate from central Persia and are distinguished by fine craftsmanship, symmetrical layouts, and intricate floral scrolling patterns. Originating in the Safavid era, these weaving techniques were refined through the 19th and early 20th centuries, usually featuring a central star or medallion surrounded by detailed arabesques and spandrels.

Traditional Isfahan carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade wool pile, often spun from kurk wool, tied onto a cotton or silk foundation warp and weft. This combination allows for extremely high knot density, enabling precise, detailed geometric and botanical motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit high knot counts per square inch, visible hand-spun wool textures, and natural dye variations known as abrash across the pile. Inspection of the reverse side shows crisp pattern definition and slight irregularities in knot structure typical of hand-loom weaving rather than machine manufacturing.

An antique Persian rug grounds a room by introducing tone and texture beneath modern streamlined furniture or dark mahogany pieces. The traditional palette pairs well with neutral walls, leather upholstery, and mixed timber finishes to create balanced visual depth.

Preserve hand-knotted textiles by vacuuming gently without a rotating brush attachment and using a quality rug underlay to prevent slippage and reduce fibre wear. Rotate the rug annually to balance light exposure and foot traffic, and treat spills immediately by blotting with clean, dry cloths rather than rubbing.
