Corvidae Antique has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
The Georgians (c.1714-1837) would paint a black dot on the bottom end of paste stones (the culet) to help give an illusion of depth and make them look more like real diamonds as they glittered in the candlelight.
The brooch fixes with a C clasp and can also be worn as a pendant because a gold bail has been attached at the back.
Size: Approximately 2.2 x 2cm.
