Fine Caucasian Rug, Circa 1900, 1.48m X 1.08m

1900 - 1920
Description

Probably woven around Erivan, Armenia, around 1900, this lovely rug has a very crisp interpretation of the Chi-chi design seen on 19th century East Caucasian rugs. Finely knotted with good quality wool and subtle colours derived from natural dyes, the detailed geometric field design is complemented by a finely drawn border with repeating geometric motifs on a mid-blue field. The whole composition is finely drawn and very attractive. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in very condition, and has recently been professionally cleaned. This rug would enhance many decorative settings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region between the Black and Caspian Seas, woven primarily by tribal villagers during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are renowned for bold geometric patterns, vibrant natural dyes, and distinct tribal motifs reflecting local traditions.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation warp and weft. The wool is dyed using natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces feature a hand-knotted wool foundation with slight irregularities in symmetry and weave density. They display traditional geometric iconography, naturally aged vegetable dyes with abrash colour variations, and short hand-finished fringe.

A Caucasian rug provides rich texture and colour contrast when paired with modern minimalist furniture or neutral floorboards. Its geometric structure grounds living spaces, hallways, or study areas without overwhelming surrounding decor.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar to protect the fibres. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and lukewarm water, and arrange professional hand-washing periodically by a specialist textile restorer.
