Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish genre painting of this period focuses on narrative scenes from daily life, rural interiors, and local figures. Artists frequently utilized transparent watercolour washes to capture ambient light and human character in domestic settings.

These artworks were executed using water-based pigments on heavy rag paper or card. Frames were typically constructed from wood with moulded gesso decoration, finished in genuine gold leaf, and fitted with glass for protection.

Authentic pieces often feature artist signatures accompanied by post-nominal initials such as R.S.W. Key indicators include period-appropriate paper aging, distinctive handling of pigment layers, and original gallery or framer labels on the reverse.

A framed antique watercolour can be hung as an accent piece in a study, library, or entry hall. Placing it against deep wall shades, such as dark blue or olive green, highlights the warmth of the gilded frame.

Watercolours must be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent pigment fading and paper foxing. Clean the glass with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the wooden gilded frame.
