Fine Persian Isfahan Rug, Circa 1910, 1.92m X 1.41m

1900 - 1920
Description

This group of antique Isfahan rugs is known as 'Mokabari' Isfahans. It is a finely knotted rug with high grade wool. Ostensibly, the design follows the medallion and spandrels format which one often sees on Isfahan rugs, but on this occasion there is a certain freedom to the drawing which suggests that it may have been woven in a village setting. The central medallion dominates the field and has a quirky irregularity in the design, while the anchors are squeezed in at each end. Even the spandrels and the flowers around the medallion have an impressionistic character, as does the main border. It's a charming composition where once again we see the talent of village weavers in Persia who are able to execute complex designs either from memory or by copying other rugs. The colour combination of this rug is subtle and very harmonious with only a handful of colours, Cherished over the generations, this piece has survived in relatively good condition with a velvety pile showing minimal signs of wear. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Isfahan rugs originate from the historic central Iranian city of Isfahan, renowned for high knot density, central medallions, and intricate floral vine motifs developed during the Safavid dynasty and refined through the early 20th century.

Traditional Isfahan carpets are hand-knotted using fine wool pile, occasionally integrated with silk highlights, constructed upon a durable cotton or silk foundation and coloured with natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces display subtle colour variations from hand-dyed yarns, asymmetrical hand-knotted backing with visible weave irregularities, complex detail around central medallions, and natural fringe finishes rather than machine stitching.

An antique Persian rug introduces warmth, depth, and organic texture to contemporary spaces, working effectively beneath understated modern furniture or anchoring classic decorative schemes.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar, rotate the carpet periodically to ensure even foot traffic, and arrange professional cleaning through specialist rug conservators when required.
