Description

Scarce early C19th Pontypool-type ‘japanned”decorated tin-ware lidded wine-cooler. Large ovoid bodied cooler with a domed lid fitted with a cast grape-vine handle , the ribbed body with corresponding stylised grape-vine looped carrying handles .The interior fitted with it’s original galvanised liner tray with handles . Raised on an oval shaped plinth foot.

The whole decorated with a floral design on a scarlet red ground, in good original fresh-to-market’ , country house condition, having some wear and loss commensurate with age , use and medium.

*The iron and tin-ware industry was established and developed in Pontypool , South Wales in the C18th by the Allgood family. The technique involved treating the metal with heat and a special varnish or lacquer . Production of similar ‘japanned’ tin-ware or ‘tole’ wares was also centred on Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of England during the early and mid C19th.

Highly decorative wine-cooler of larger scale which could also perhaps be used in which to display flowers .

Pontypool japanned ware refers to decorated sheet-iron tinware produced primarily in Wales from the late seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, characterised by heat-cured lacquer finishes inspired by Asian lacquerwork.

These vessels were typically crafted from sheet iron or tinplate, shaped into urn or tub forms, coated with asphaltum lacquer layers, hand-painted with gilded or floral decoration, and fitted with cast metal handles and finials.
