FAQs

Chromolithography was a technique popularised in the nineteenth century for producing multi-colour prints using multiple chemical stones or zinc plates. Each colour required a separate drawn plate, resulting in rich tones used extensively for natural history, agricultural, and scientific illustrations.

Nineteenth-century lithographs were printed onto heavy rag paper using oil-based inks applied via lithographic stones. Original prints were often presented under glass within solid timber frames, secured with card mounts to prevent direct surface contact.

Authentic lithographs display continuous tonal areas created by fine grain patterns from the printing stone rather than the uniform dot matrix visible in modern digital reproductions. Age-appropriate toning, slight paper foxing, and impression marks from the original mounting process also indicate authenticity.

A set of four prints can be arranged in a symmetrical two-by-two grid to create a focal point on a main wall or styled in a horizontal line along a corridor or above a sideboard to complement traditional and country interiors.

Display paper prints away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and mould growth. Ensure framing utilises acid-free mountboard and UV-filtering glass to protect the paper fibre and pigment stability over time.
