FitzGerald was a member of the Irish House of Commons and a Lieutenant-General in the Royal Irish Artillery, and with his many titles he became in 1766 the Premier Duke, Marquess, and Earl in the Peerage of Ireland. In 1747 he married Lady Emily Lennox, of the famous Lennox sisters, and together they had 19 children.
