Georgian portraiture, spanning from 1714 to 1830, is defined by formal compositions depicting royalty, nobility, and wealthy patrons. Artists focused on capturing social status through detailed costume rendering, refined drapery, and controlled lighting techniques.

Oil paintings of this period were executed using hand-ground mineral and organic pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil, applied onto hand-woven linen canvases mounted on wooden keyable stretchers.

Authentic paintings from the era exhibit age-appropriate craquelure patterns, natural oxidisation of old varnish layers, hand-cut wooden stretchers, and evidence of historical relining or hand-forged tacks along the edges.

An eighteenth-century portrait serves as a focal point when mounted above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, contrasting with modern minimalism or complementary traditional furnishings.

Keep the painting in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, open fires, or radiators. Light dusting with a soft, dry brush is recommended, while professional conservators should handle surface cleaning and varnish removal.
