Ormolu Antique French Rococo Cartel Wall Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A magnificent and very large original antique French Rococo cartel wall clock. Asymmetrically modelled in the Louis XV style, the dial bursting through the swirling clouds as the sun, cherubs climbing through them, one with a bouquet, one with a cornucopia. The rays backed with red fabric fretwork to lighten the design. It is made of ormolu (finely gilded bronze).

The large dial is porcelain enamel on copper and is complete with its original finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex glass.

The French movement is of high quality and is by A.D. Mougin. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste this into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/DragonAntiques/videos/1523297758258695

An similar 18th Century clock can be seen in the "Encyclopedie de La Pendule Francaise" by Pierre Kjellberg, page 101. The subject of the clock is probably based on a few Rococo influences of the mid 18th century, the putti paintings of François Boucher and perhaps the painting 'Children floating on the clouds' by Johann Heinrich Tishbein the Elder.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some slight wear and discolouration. There are a few minor flaws in the casting. The dial is also very good with just some slight marks. We have replaced the red fabric with fresh. There are some light scratches to the original glass. The rear door has been replaced at sometime.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cartel clock is a type of wall-mounted clock enclosed within a cartouche-shaped frame, popularised in France during the 18th-century Rococo movement.

These clocks are typically constructed from heavy cast bronze that has been chased and gilded using mercury gilding techniques, known as ormolu, featuring white enamel dials with Roman and Arabic numerals.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-chased detailing, asymmetrical rocaille scrollwork, weight appropriate for cast bronze, and movement maker marks stamped onto the backplate.

Position the clock centrally above a mantelpiece, console table, or within an art gallery wall to serve as a focal point against contemporary paint schemes.

Dust the case regularly with a soft brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals, brass polish, or abrasives that can strip the delicate gilded surface.
