The Widow of Zarephath Staffordshire Pottery Figure, 9"

Description

Staffordshire pottery figurine depicting the Widow of Zarephath and her son. Bright polychrome enamelling in blue, yellow, purple and green hues.



Inspired by the Bible story of Elijah (1 Kings 17) where a poor widow's faith was tested through the prophet. A popular subject in classical art, this design was used in Staffordshire pottery since 1820's.



Height approx. 23 cm

Width approx. 11 cm

Weight 1.16 kg



Condition: Losses to the bocage on the back; hairline crack to base.
