Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The botehs are beautifully drawn - one in red, the other in ivory, and both symbolising fertility where the ivory boteh is the male (the sky) and the red boteh being the female (the earth).
In very good complete condition with original goat-hair loops, the plain-weave madder-red back only, has a slight stain from use in the field.
