Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Regency period, spanning roughly 1811 to 1830, is defined by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architectural influences. Furniture from this era often exhibits clean lines, rich dark woods like mahogany, brass mountings, and symmetrical proportions.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilized solid mahogany, rosewood, and flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcases. Fine detailing often incorporated brass inlay, cast brass escutcheons, and marble tops.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed secondary timbers, and original lock mechanisms. The timber will show natural oxidation and shrinkage lines consistent with age, particularly around drawer bottoms and back panels.

A dark mahogany cabinet can be contrasted against light neutral wall paint or contemporary artwork. Placing modern lamps or ceramic vessels on top creates a balanced blend of period charm and current design elements.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lifting.
