Copeland Coloured Parian Figure of "Adversity" by Owen Hale, C. 1870

Description

Very rare antique Victorian Copeland coloured Parian Ware figure of "Adversity", by Owen Hale.



The large biscuit porcelain sculpture is hand-painted in subdued powder blue and pink palette with delicate floral bouquets to the dress and gilt accents.



The figure depicts a poorly dressed girl in an ill-fitting dress, carrying a basket of wilting flowers.



The statue rests on a marbelised base that is impressed with "COPELAND" to reverse and "ADVERSITY" to the front.



Sculpted by Owen Hale, dating to c. 1870.

Base dimensions 14.6 x 14.6 x cm

Weight 2832 g

Condition: Right arm restored from above the elbow to the finger tips; hairline crack to base around hem of dress. Overpainting of the left hand. The restoration has been carried out to a very high professional standard and can only be seen on closer inspection. Otherwise the figurine is in excellent antique condition with excellent colour preservation.

Parian porcelain is an unglazed biscuit porcelain developed in the mid-19th century to imitate carved marble, with coloured variants incorporating painted enamels and gilded highlights over the matte surface.

These figures were cast by pouring liquid slip into multi-part plaster moulds, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently detailed with hand-applied ceramic pigments and gold leaf before a lower-temperature secondary firing.

Authentic pieces feature sharp cast detail, a silky satin surface texture similar to marble, impressed manufacturer marks or artist signatures near the base, and soft surface wear on the underside.
