Description

A highly decorative 19th Century inlaid satinwood tray of oval form, having a raised gallery with brass carrying handles either end, having lovely intricate inlay incorporating various floral decoration, ivory cherubs and wolves heads, with a large oval shell inlay at the centre, fabulous inlay and all in very good condition. Circa 1880.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

Satinwood trays became prominent during the late 18th and 19th centuries, heavily influenced by Neoclassical and Sheraton designs. Cabinetmakers used fine satinwood veneers decorated with detailed marquetry inlays to create elegant serving pieces for tea service and formal entertainment.

These trays typically feature a base of dense timber covered with satinwood veneer, embellished with contrasting exotic wood inlays such as boxwood, ebony, and rosewood. Cast brass side handles were routinely fitted to assist with carrying.

Authentic period pieces display natural wood grain variations, hand-cut inlay joinery, and natural age oxidation on both the timber and brass components. The underside often shows hand-planed secondary wood construction rather than modern plywood.
