The Country Girl, 1889 Impressionist Child Study, Swedish Artist in Paris Oil on Panel

19th century
Description

A beautiful and sensitive study of a country girl by William Feron.

William Feron was born in 1858 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of the famous jeweller Ludwig Constantin Feron, owner of Möllenborgs, the largest jewellry firm in Sweden. William first studied art at the Tekniska Skolan and then at the Art Academy in Stockholm. In 1880, he travelled to Paris, working in the city for most of the decade. William exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1882 and 1885. In 1889, he exhibited at the Exposition Universelle. William Feron is regarded as one of the first Swedish artists influenced by the Impressionist Movement. His work, 'Spring in Paris' is in the collection of The Gothenburg Museum of Art in Sweden (biography of the artist courtesy of Bonhams, where a work by the artist sold in 2016 for £7500).

Our oil on panel measures 30 x 23 cm and is signed or annotated at the verso, where it is also dedicated to "Mr Edwards". Presented in its original frame, the overall size is 38.5 x 32 cm. Both panel and frame have a slight warp but are in good condition.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century Impressionist portraiture focuses on capturing natural light, brushwork fluidity, and realistic human character rather than stylized idealisation. Artists often rendered everyday subjects, including rural figures and children, using visible brushstrokes and muted tonal palettes.

Artists frequently executed quick studies and finished works using oil paint on wooden panels or canvas stretched over wooden frames. Panels provided a smooth, rigid surface ideal for capturing fine detail and direct brushwork during plein air or studio painting sessions.

Verification involves examining signature placement, panel craquelure, frame construction, and wood oxidisation consistent with age. Art historical research and provenance tracking further confirm the attribution and period of the artwork.

A historical oil portrait can be styled as a focal point above a console table, within a gallery wall, or integrated into a minimalist space to provide historical contrast. Pairing dark oil studies with neutral walls enhances the tonal values of the artwork.

Keep oil panels away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent warping or paint flaking. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
