Description

A late 19thc cast model of a woodsman c1880. The figure is cast in spelter, a much used alloy which is less expensive than bronze but which achieved very detailed effects. The modelling is excellent, with finely defined features, clothing and objects. The young man leans on a long axe and the bag of charcoal suggests he makes it as part of his work, with success, hence his confident posture. The model stands on a spelter base with a plaque inscribed Bucheron Complaisant (Amiable Logcutter) and the name of the original sculptor George Maxim. The model is also signed Bucheron (or similar) at its base. The surface has a bronzed finish and is in excellent condition.
