View across the River Thames to Limehouse Dock in 1895. Thames Sailing Barges with their shallow draft are seen on the river and at Limehouse Pier, unloading goods to transport up Regents Canal. Steamships are also seen which are gradually taking over the waters at the end of the 19th Century. In the middle is a wherry transporting goods - the long oars of the Waterman are clear to see as he paddles with the tide.
This is a very lovey evocative watercolour by William E Harris 1860-1930, at a time when the Thames in London was such an important trading hub. There is an inscription on the back of the watercolour ''Limehouse Pier''.
The watercolour is in good condition with very little foxing and rich colours. Glazed and framed with thick mount.
William Harris originally from Birmingham, later moved to London exhibiting 50 works at the the Royal Society of British Artists. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a successful artist during his lifetime.
