Wonderful colours, quality and condition
Wolter travelled to southern England for the first time in 1909. He visited and painted coastal and fishing towns such as Polperro, Lynmouth and St.Ives in Devon and Cornwall. He drew a lot of inspiration from his time in England and would return there often. In 1914 Wolter moved to Amsteldijk 47 in Amsterdam. The studio on the 3rd floor overlooked the Amstel and the Hoge Sluis. Here he painted a series of Amstel scenes that are considered among his best-known works. The outbreak of the First World War made travelling abroad impossible. During those war years Wolter painted ports, rivers, cities and village views in the Netherlands, including in Zeeland (Veere, Tholen, Zierikzee), but also in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Enkhuizen Dordrecht and Rhenen.
He painted the Thames from different locations, with Waterloo Bridge or Tower Bridge in the background.
