We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century figurative portraiture often blends realistic subject matter with expressive brushwork or palette knife techniques. European artists during this period frequently depicted subjects such as ballet dancers, capturing movement and posture through soft lighting and muted colour schemes.

Artists typically applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames from this era were constructed from moulded wood, often featuring fabric or linen-wrapped inner slips and hand-applied paint or gilt finishes.

Authentic oil paintings demonstrate genuine surface texture, painterly impasto, and natural signs of age such as slight varnish discolouration. Examining the reverse of the frame for period-appropriate stretcher bars and verifying the artists handwritten signature helps confirm authenticity.

A framed portrait serves as an effective focal point when placed above a console table or mantelpiece, contrasting with clean architectural lines. Combining historic artworks with contemporary minimalist furnishings creates a balanced scheme that highlights the tactile quality of the painting.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that could compromise the paint layer. Position the artwork away from direct sunlight, dampness, and active heat sources to prevent canvas warping or surface cracking.
